Most people think of jewelry as timeless, but the reality is that even the best-made pieces will eventually need some repair work. The good news is that most jewelry repairs are relatively simple. Here are some of the most common repairs done on jewelry.
Ring Resizing
As your fingers change size over time, it's not uncommon for rings to become loose or tight. When a ring becomes too loose, it can slip off and get lost. When a ring becomes too tight, it can be uncomfortable to wear. Either way, ring resizing is a relatively simple repair that can be done in a reputable jewelry store.
When resizing a ring, the jeweler needs to determine the current size of the ring. This process involves measuring the inside diameter of the ring. Once the current size is known, the jeweler will decide how much the ring needs to be resized.
For example, if the ring is currently a size seven and needs to be resized to a size eight, the jeweler may need to add material to the ring. On the other hand, if the ring is currently a size eight and needs to be resized to a size seven, the jeweler may need to remove material from the ring.
In most cases, adding material is relatively simple and can be done by soldering on a small piece of metal. However, removing material can be much more difficult, as it often requires cutting away part of the band and then soldering it back together. As a result, ring resizing is typically fairly straightforward, but it's important to consult a professional before making any changes to your precious jewelry.
Clasp Repair
A clasp is a small metal fastener that attaches the two ends of a piece of jewelry, like a necklace, together. It can be made from different materials, including gold, silver, and platinum.
Over time, clasps can become damaged or worn, making it difficult to keep the jewelry securely in place. In fact, a broken clasp can render a piece of jewelry unusable. Fortunately, clasp repair is typically a quick and easy fix. In most cases, the jeweler will simply need to solder the broken clasp back together. However, if the clasp is severely damaged, it may need to be replaced entirely.
In addition, clasp repair is usually much less expensive than buying a new piece of jewelry. It's always worth taking your jewelry to a professional for repair before you give up on it entirely.
